The Story: Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognised castles in Scotland. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations and has been featured in a number of films. It’s on its own small island at the point where three lochs meet. There are many existing photo’s of this place which is why Mark wanted to capture something different. He persevered over a number of days and took this shot, at sunrise, between snow showers. Mark tends to process most of his work in black and white, but loves the gold of the sunrise reflected in the lake, contrasting with the rest of the shot, which naturally rendered black and white due to the snow. The results speak for themselves.

Mark Z Alvarez, originally from East London, has made Cambridge his home for over twenty years and is an established member of its vibrant and thriving arts community.

Mark has always been passionate about the arts, whether it’s music, theatre, literature, painting or photography. He was in three operas at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as a child. However, his primary passion has always been photography, with early influences being Ansell Adams, Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier Bresson.

Discouraged from pursuing arts qualifications at school, Mark decided to become a professional photographer later in life. He is self taught and now exhibits in Cambridge and London.

Due to his love of travel Mark frequently enjoys discovering new, breathtaking and thought-provoking locations. Often, his subject matter is chosen and captured to provide a surreal and other-worldly atmosphere intended to stimulate the viewer's imagination.

Mark is also a management team member of Cambridge Open Studios, a prestigious organisation founded nearly fifty years ago that represents over five hundred artists and makers.
