The Story: “Brighton is on the coast, but immediately behind it are the rolling South Downs.
Telscombe Cliffs, where I went to school a few miles away, has a sister village inland. Guess what it’s called? Yes indeed, Telscombe Village.
Wherever I am, beach or valley, the presence of the other place is always playing like a cross-rhythm in my mind.
With the furrows of the ploughed field painted on the promenade, I’ve tried to depict it here.”
